Rolled out of Hellin at 8.45am after a hotel breakfast. Early scare when the coffee machine was playing up but the man fixed it and all was well except that the Spanish waiter from last night had let down Eric’s tyre.
It was straight up hill for the first 20 miles, never steep, just dragging at 3 to 4% and with the tunes blasting out the time passed quickly. Nowhere else in Spain would you hear Five Finger Death Punch followed by The Nolans.
A drink and food stop followed in Pozohondo and then we were back on the road including a Jimmy Tours special on a service road alongside a canal for about 6 miles.
Lunch was had in a taverna in Barrax, the only foreigners in a room filled with loud talking Spaniards, a bit like being in a room with a dozen George Gass’s in full flow.
The fever dream continued after lunch as we hit a long straight road and stayed on it until our stop for the night in Villarebledo. It went on and on for 30 miles, rolling terrain, every time we reached a peak the next section looked identical, like a tarmac version of Groundhog Day or a transition stage in the Vuelta.
Hotel reached at 4pm we sat outside with beer, coffee, fizzy water and ice cream
That is all for tonight folks, we are off to dip our scrotums in Sudocreme before reconvening to see what culinary delights rural Spain can throw at us tonight
