Day 1 - At just after 9am the 4 of us rolled out of Los Montesinos on roads initially familiar to all except Chris. Sadly one part of the team had to pull out at the last minute after Eric’s new fanny magnet follicle attachment (el jarabe) followed in the footsteps of many an Ayrshire girl and rejected him, suffering from a bad case of cancellitus.
In temperatures exceeding 30 degrees the first stop of the day was in Abanilla, after 25 miles, for toasties and cold drinks followed by a dodgy sounding drink called a Bumar - which turned out to be very refreshing.
Through rolling terrain and heat we had a quick stop in Torre del Rico after 40 miles for a sugar input and liquid. Then onto lunch after 57 miles in Jumilla with tapas that kept getting added to. I've quickly realised that I'm going to have to give up trying to keep up with the others or my clothes will all be too small by the end of the fortnight.
Last 24 miles through more hot rolling terrain to Hellin where it appeared out hotel for the night was shut. We rolled up and down the pavement, at one point past an odd looking bloke waving his hand at us. Turns out he was trying to tell us that the reception was at the back of the building and all was good again.
